Gold Melt Value Explained
Melt value is the raw worth of the pure gold inside an item, calculated from weight, karat purity and the live spot price — it's the floor, not always the ceiling, of what a piece is worth.

What 'melt value' actually means
Melt value is the theoretical worth of an item if it were melted down into pure gold and sold at the current market price — hence the name. It ignores design, brand, craftsmanship, gemstones and sentimental value entirely, focusing only on the raw metal content: how much actual gold is inside, and what that gold is worth right now.
This number matters because it's the baseline every honest gold offer starts from. A buyer might pay above melt value for a signed designer piece or a rare coin, but they will never pay meaningfully below it for straightforward scrap gold, since they can always recover at least melt value by refining the item.
The formula, step by step
The calculation has three inputs: the item's weight in grams, its karat purity as a decimal, and the current spot price per gram of pure (24K) gold. Multiply all three together and you get the item's melt value.
Weight (grams) x Purity (decimal) x Spot price per gram = Melt value. For example, a 12-gram 18K bracelet at a $75/gram spot price: 12 x 0.75 x $75 = $675.00 in melt value. Change the karat to 14K instead and the same weight and spot price yields 12 x 0.583 x $75 = $524.70 — a meaningful difference driven entirely by purity.
Why spot price moves the number constantly
Gold's spot price is set by continuous global trading and reacts to interest rates, currency strength, and broader economic uncertainty. Because it changes throughout the trading day, the same physical item can have a slightly different melt value calculated an hour apart — this is normal and isn't a sign anyone is manipulating the number.
This is also why reputable buyers won't quote a fixed dollar price over the phone sight unseen; a firm offer has to be tied to the spot price at the moment of the actual transaction, after the item has been tested and weighed.
When an item is worth more than melt
Melt value is a floor, not always a ceiling. Certain categories of items regularly sell for more than their gold content alone would suggest, because collectors, designer buyers or investors are willing to pay for something beyond the raw metal.
- Signed designer jewelry from recognized fashion houses
- Rare or limited-mintage gold coins with numismatic demand
- Bullion bars and coins from trusted refiners, valued for liquidity
- Antique or estate pieces with historical or craftsmanship significance
Getting an accurate melt value in Houston
The only way to know your item's real melt value is to have it professionally tested for karat and weighed on a legal-for-trade scale, then priced against the live spot price at that moment — guessing from a stamp or a rough weight estimate isn't reliable.

Questions about this guide
- Is melt value the same as what a buyer will pay me?
- No. Melt value is the raw gold content's worth; most buyers offer a percentage of that figure to cover refining costs and margin, which should be disclosed to you before you agree to sell.
- Does melt value account for gemstones?
- No. Melt value only reflects the gold content. Diamonds and other stones are appraised and valued separately from the metal.
- Why did my item's quoted value change between visits?
- Spot gold prices move continuously during trading hours, so the same item's melt value calculation will shift slightly from day to day or even hour to hour.
- Can I calculate melt value myself before selling?
- Yes, if you know the exact weight and karat: multiply grams by the karat's decimal purity, then by the current spot price per gram. A buyer's actual testing and scale reading may differ slightly from a home estimate.
