Gold weight is the floor, not the ceiling

Because Rolex has never made a Day-Date in steel, the case and President bracelet together carry real bullion weight — a 36mm yellow gold example is commonly in the 130 to 150 gram range, and 40mm platinum models are heavier still. That metal value is calculated from the live gold or platinum market on the day you sell.

For a clean, desirable reference the watch value is comfortably above melt and that is what we pay. For a heavily worn, non-original or damaged example, the metal number can be the higher of the two. Either way you see both figures, which is not something most sellers are shown.

36mm, 40mm and the dial that drives the number

The classic 36mm case ran for decades and covers the 1803 through the 118238. The 40mm 228-series arrived in 2015 with a fluted-edge case, updated President bracelet and the calibre 3255. Both sell well; they simply appeal to different buyers, and current demand skews toward the larger case in some configurations.

Dials swing Day-Date values further than on any other Rolex family. Stone dials — onyx, lapis, malachite, wood — factory diamond hour markers, Roman numeral 'buckley' style dials and the ombré and green dials of recent years each have their own following. A clean original dial in an unusual finish frequently outruns a diamond-set aftermarket one.

Factory versus aftermarket stone setting

A large share of the Presidents that come across our counter have been set with diamonds by someone other than Rolex — usually the bezel, sometimes the lugs and bracelet. Aftermarket work removes gold, is not reversible, and narrows the resale market, so in most cases it lowers value rather than raising it, however good the stones are.

Bracelet condition and the language on the day wheel

President bracelets stretch. Decades of wear opens the links, and a bracelet that has lost several millimeters of tightness or has had links removed and lost will show in the offer, because replacements in solid gold are expensive. Bring any removed links you still have.

Day wheels came in many languages, and in Houston we regularly see Spanish-language Presidents. An unusual language wheel is not a problem — for certain markets it is a plus — and it is simply another detail we record during the inspection.
