What the Saros annual calendar actually does
The Sky-Dweller knows how long every month is except February, so it only needs correcting once a year. The month is shown by twelve small apertures set against the hour markers around the dial — the one that is filled in tells you the month, which is why the dial looks slightly unusual at a glance.
During an appraisal we advance the calendar to confirm the date rolls and the correct aperture is highlighted. A mechanism that does not index is a specialist repair, not a routine service, and it makes a real difference to the number.
The Ring Command bezel and how it is set
Instead of the usual pull-out crown positions, the rotating fluted bezel selects what the crown adjusts: local time, reference time or the date. Rotating it clicks through those modes mechanically.
A bezel that does not click positively into each position, or a crown that adjusts the wrong function, is a fault we need to identify before quoting. It is also the part of the watch owners are most likely to have never used, so we walk through it together rather than assuming.
Steel, Rolesor, gold and the dial market
The 42mm case comes in Oystersteel with a white gold fluted bezel, in yellow Rolesor, and in solid yellow, white and Everose gold. The gold references carry substantial metal weight, which is considered in the evaluation. Even when a solid-gold watch is damaged beyond repair or is no longer desirable as a collectible timepiece, its underlying gold content may still retain value.
Dial demand moves independently. The blue and slate dials, and the more recent brighter dial options, have each had periods of strong demand, and a Jubilee bracelet rather than an Oyster can separate two otherwise identical watches. We quote your configuration rather than a model average.
