Metal is the biggest variable on a Datejust

A steel Datejust, a two-tone Rolesor Datejust and a solid 18K gold Datejust can look similar across a counter and be worth wildly different amounts. Solid gold references — the 16238, 116238, 128238 and their white and Everose equivalents — carry a floor set by gold content, which protects value even on well-worn examples.

Two-tone Rolesor pieces have their own market, currently much healthier than they were a decade ago. Steel Datejusts are valued almost entirely on condition, dial and demand, because their scrap value is negligible.

Dials, bezels and bracelets

Dial variety is the defining trait of this model. Tapestry, linen, sundust, wimbledon, mother-of-pearl, factory diamond, Roman, Arabic and baton dials all trade differently, and some discontinued dials are worth more than the reference average.

Bezel type is next: fluted bezels are typically gold even on a steel Rolesor case, smooth bezels read more understated, and diamond bezels need to be checked for whether the stones are factory-set or added later. Bracelets matter too — an original Jubilee or Oyster with matching end links and low stretch supports a higher offer than a replaced or aftermarket band.

Factory diamonds vs aftermarket stones

This is the most common misunderstanding we correct on Datejusts. Diamonds added by a third party do not raise value the way owners expect. Rolex collectors generally treat aftermarket bezels and dials as modifications, so those stones are valued on their own merit as diamonds rather than as part of the watch.

Condition, service and authenticity

We check the movement calibre against the reference, look for correct case-back and rehaut engravings, examine the crystal and cyclops, and test winding, date change and time-setting function. Non-running Datejusts and pieces needing service are still bought, with the service cost accounted for openly.

Bracelet stretch is worth mentioning because it is so common on older Datejusts: decades of wear elongates the links, and a badly stretched bracelet is a real replacement cost that affects the offer.
