How to tell a Sea-Dweller from a Submariner
The Sea-Dweller is rated to far greater depth — 1,220 meters on the 16600 and 116600 generations — which shows in a thicker case, a thicker crystal, and a helium escape valve at 9 o'clock that no Submariner has. Until the 126600 arrived in 2017, it also had no cyclops magnifier over the date, because the crystal was too thick to carry one.
That last point confuses people regularly: a flat, unmagnified date window on a diver with a valve at nine is the quickest way to spot a Sea-Dweller across the counter. The 126600 broke the pattern by adding both a 43mm case and a cyclops, and it is the reference most modern sellers bring us.
The vintage references and their dial text
On the 1665, the dial printing is most of the value. Early examples carry two lines of red text — the 'Double Red' — and later ones the white 'Great White' printing. Within Double Red dials there are recognized printing variations that collectors separate carefully, and a service replacement dial fitted during a Rolex overhaul puts the watch in a completely different bracket.
For those watches, we would rather see an untouched, honest example with scratches than one that has been polished and fitted with fresh parts. If Rolex returned old parts to you in a service pouch, bring the pouch.
Helium valve, crystal and service history
The helium escape valve is a functional part and it wears. We check that it is present, correct for the reference and not seized, and we look at the crystal for aftermarket replacement, which is common on 40mm references that have lived a hard life.
A documented recent service — Rolex or a competent independent, with the invoice — reduces risk for the next owner and supports a stronger offer, particularly on 16600 and 16660 references that are now decades old. A watch that needs service is still bought, with the cost accounted for openly.

- Is my Sea-Dweller worth more than a Submariner of the same age?
- Often, but not always. They are separate markets, and configuration and condition decide it. We quote your reference against current data rather than assuming a premium.
- My Sea-Dweller has no magnifier over the date — is something missing?
- No. Sea-Dwellers before the 126600 were made without a cyclops because of the thickness of the crystal. That is correct and original.
- Does a seized helium escape valve stop you buying the watch?

- Do you buy a vintage 1665 that has been serviced by Rolex?
