36mm, 39mm and back to 36mm
The Explorer stayed at 36mm for most of its life, grew to 39mm with the 214270 in 2010, and returned to 36mm with the 124270 in 2021. Those size changes track real shifts in demand, and they are the reason two Explorers from the same decade can sit far apart on price.
Within the 39mm 214270 there is a well-known split: the earliest examples were criticized for hour and minute hands that looked short against the dial and for painted, non-luminous numerals. Rolex revised both around 2016 with longer hands and lume-filled 3-6-9 numerals. Buyers pay attention to which one they are getting, so we identify it during the inspection.
The vintage 1016 and why dials decide it
The 1016 ran for roughly three decades, which produced glossy gilt dials early on and matte dials later, with tritium lume that ages to a range of cream and tan tones. Matching lume between the dial plots and the hands is one of the first things a collector checks, because mismatched aging usually means replaced hands.
A service dial fitted by Rolex during an overhaul is perfectly legitimate but sits in a different market from an original one. We tell you which you have and what it means, and we would rather see a scratched original than a tidy replacement.
Why polishing hurts this model more than most
With no bezel, no crown guards on vintage references and no date window, the case profile is the whole design. Polishing rounds the lug edges and thins the case, and it cannot be reversed — on an Explorer that damage is unusually visible.
If you are thinking about tidying the watch up before selling, do not. We would rather buy an honest, worn case than a refinished one, and the offer reflects that.

- Neither is automatically higher. Demand has shifted between the sizes over time, so we quote the reference you own against current market data.

- Yes. A Rolex service dial is legitimate but places the watch in a different market than an original dial, which we explain when we quote.
- My Explorer bracelet is stretched. Does that matter?
