10K gold is legally required to contain at least 41.7% pure gold (10 out of 24 parts), with the remainder made up of alloy metals like copper, silver and zinc that add strength and change color slightly. Because it's the minimum karat sold as 'gold' in the United States, it's also the most durable karat for everyday jewelry that takes daily wear.

The math for melt value is straightforward: multiply the item's weight in grams by 0.417, then multiply by the current spot price per gram of pure gold. A 5-gram 10K class ring at a $75/gram spot price works out to 5 x 0.417 x $75 = $156.38 in gold content — before any collector or sentimental premium.

Where you'll find 10K gold

10K shows up most often in class rings, high school and college jewelry, charm bracelets, religious medals, and costume-adjacent fashion pieces meant to survive years of daily wear without bending or scratching easily. Its higher copper and alloy content is what gives many class rings their slightly warmer or more matte tone compared to 14K or 18K pieces.

Because it's the entry-level karat, 10K is also common in mass-produced fashion jewelry from department stores and mall jewelers, especially pieces made before the early 2000s when 10K was more widely marketed than it is today.

Hallmarks to look for

10K jewelry is typically stamped '10K,' '10KT,' '.417,' or occasionally 'P10K' for plumb 10 karat. Class rings often carry the school name or year alongside the karat stamp inside the band, and many older pieces also carry a maker's mark from the jewelry manufacturer.

What to know before you sell

Because 10K has the least gold content per gram of the common karats, its scrap value per gram will always be the lowest of the five karat tiers — but that doesn't mean it's not worth selling. Old class rings and charm bracelets sitting in a drawer have no sentimental use once a name or year no longer means anything to you, and the gold content still has real cash value.

Some 10K class rings do carry small collector interest tied to a specific school or era, but the vast majority are priced on melt value alone. If your ring has an engraved name, initials or a birthstone, mention it — it won't add gold value, but a buyer should still note it during appraisal.
