Selling Omega, Cartier and Other Luxury Watches

Every luxury watch brand has its own resale patterns — here's what actually moves the needle for Omega, Cartier, Patek Philippe and eight other brands we buy regularly.

Collection of luxury watch brands including Omega and Cartier

Omega and TAG Heuer: the everyday luxury tier

Omega Speedmasters and Seamasters hold resale value well, particularly models tied to a notable reference like the Moonwatch, and buyers look closely at whether the bracelet and bezel are original since Omega parts are frequently swapped over decades of ownership. TAG Heuer sits a tier below Omega in typical resale terms, but Carrera and Monaco models with documented service history and original dials still command solid offers, especially chronograph versions with working pushers and a clean tachymeter bezel.

Cartier: the case shape is the value

Cartier watches like the Tank, Santos and Ballon Bleu are valued heavily on case originality and condition, since the distinctive case shapes are the brand's core identity and any distortion or heavy polishing noticeably affects value. Gold and two-tone Cartier pieces also carry real precious-metal weight in the appraisal, which is checked against live spot price alongside the design premium.

Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet: papers matter most

At this tier, documentation carries outsized weight. A Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet with its extract of origin, original box and full service history can appraise meaningfully higher than an identical watch without paperwork, because these brands' collector markets place a premium on verified provenance. Both brands' in-house movements are also inspected closely, since a worn or improperly serviced movement on a high-complication piece is expensive to correct and factors into the offer.

Breitling, IWC and Panerai: tool-watch DNA

Breitling's Navitimer and Superocean lines are judged on bezel and crystal condition since these are tool watches meant to be used, and light wear is expected and doesn't hurt value much. IWC pilot's watches and Portugieser models are checked for movement condition and case wear, with the brand's larger case sizes making dial and crystal originality easy to inspect. Panerai's oversized cases and cushion shapes are checked for polishing history, since Panerai's brushed finishes show heavy polishing more obviously than most other brands.

Tudor and Hublot: momentum brands

Tudor has built strong resale demand in recent years, particularly the Black Bay line, and because Tudor shares Rolex's manufacturing heritage, buyers check the same things — reference number, bracelet stretch, and bezel originality. Hublot's Big Bang and Classic Fusion lines are valued on case material (titanium, ceramic and gold variants all price differently) and on the condition of the rubber strap, which shows age faster than metal bracelets and is often a straightforward, inexpensive replacement that doesn't significantly affect the offer.

  • Omega/TAG Heuer: original bracelet and bezel, service history
  • Cartier: case shape integrity, metal content on gold models
  • Patek Philippe/AP: extract of origin and full papers matter most
  • Breitling/IWC/Panerai: bezel, crystal and case-polish history
  • Tudor/Hublot: reference-level demand and strap/bracelet condition

Questions about this guide

Do you buy watches other than Rolex?
Yes. We regularly buy Omega, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Breitling, TAG Heuer, IWC, Panerai, Tudor and Hublot, among other brands.
Does a rubber strap on a Hublot need to be replaced before selling?
No. Worn rubber straps are common, inexpensive to replace, and don't significantly affect the offer on the watch itself.
Why does paperwork matter more for Patek Philippe than for other brands?
Patek Philippe's collector market places a strong premium on verified provenance, so an extract of origin and full documentation can meaningfully raise the appraised value.
Is a Tudor Black Bay a good watch to sell right now?
Tudor's Black Bay line has built strong resale demand in recent years, and reference number, bracelet condition and bezel originality are the main factors in its current value.
