How Luxury Watches Are Appraised

Movement inspection

The first thing an appraiser checks after identifying the model is the movement itself. The case back is opened (or, for models where that's impractical without specialist tools, the movement is verified through the dial side or with an authorized inspection method) to confirm the caliber matches what that reference should contain. Appraisers check that the movement runs, that the balance wheel oscillates cleanly, that the date changes correctly at midnight, and listen for irregular ticking that can indicate a worn escapement or a service that's overdue.

A mismatched movement — a caliber that doesn't belong in that reference, or a movement with non-factory replacement parts — is one of the clearest signs of a 'Frankenwatch' assembled from parts of multiple watches, and it significantly changes the appraisal.

Case, dial and bracelet measurements

Case dimensions are measured against factory specifications for that reference — lug-to-lug length, case thickness and diameter all have to fall within the tolerances of the genuine model. Case backs, crowns and pushers are checked for correct engravings and hallmarks, and the dial is examined under magnification for printing quality, lume application and font consistency, since counterfeiters frequently get small printing details wrong even on otherwise convincing fakes.

The bracelet or strap is checked separately: end-link fit, clasp engravings, and stretch in the links are all noted, since a mismatched or aftermarket bracelet on an otherwise genuine watch will lower the appraisal even though the watch head itself is authentic.

Authentication and originality checks

Beyond the physical measurements, an appraiser cross-references the reference number, serial number and production year against known manufacturing patterns for that brand, since serial ranges correspond to specific years and certain combinations simply shouldn't exist. Any inconsistency between the case, dial, movement and bracelet ages is a red flag that gets investigated before a value is assigned.

Market comparables

Once authenticity and condition are confirmed, the appraiser compares the watch against recent sales and current asking prices for that exact reference and condition tier across the secondary market. This step is what keeps an appraisal grounded in reality rather than a brand's original retail price, since resale demand for a given reference can be well above or below what it originally sold for.

For watches with precious metal cases or bracelets, the appraiser also factors in the live spot price of that metal as a floor value, which is then combined with the collector demand figure to reach the final number.
